Creativity Through Constraint
[Kathy Sierra's](http://headrush.typepad.com/) latest [post](http://headrush.typepad.com/creating_passionate_users/2006/10/how_to_make_som.html) on her blog *Creating Passionate Users* is as inciteful as ever. *Creating Passionate Users* is hands-down my favorite blog, on average every or third or fourth post seriously inspires me, and the rest are priceless for their insight and accuracy.
In her latest post Kathy discusses how absolute freedom can lead to laziness, while constraints can force creativity. As examples she she mentions a 24-hour film-making contest and a 1-month novel-writing contest. The key to the novel contest is to write, not well, but just to write. The act of actually getting something out on a page ends up having more benefits (practice, etc) than waiting around to write a masterpiece.
It’s happened again, and I’ve been inspired by another *Creating Passionate Users* post. Many thanks to Kathy and her amazing work! From now on I will work on growing my creativity, vocabulary, etc by just posting. If that means the post is shorter, or less than it could be, so be it! Stay tuned over the next week or so to see if my inspiration holds, and if I’m not dragged back into anonymity by school, work, projects, and the tatters that used to be my social life.
