Disable the Last.fm Helper

I was getting rather frustrated by the Last.fm Helper’s insistence on loading every boot regardless of how many times I removed the shortcut from the startup folder or searched the options for a “Load on Startup” checkbox in vain. Well, some useless googling and a trip to the Last.fm forums finally revealed a guaranteed gold for the MOST UNINTUITIVE OPTION EVER award.

To prevent the Last.fm helper from loading at startup (which is absolutely not required to work properly unless you’re using an iPod)

  • Open the Helper’s Options under Tools
  • Open the iPod tab
  • Select “Disable iPod Scrobbling”

Yep folks, that’s right. To tell the helper not to make my Vista boot times even longer, I need to select “Disable iPod Scrobbling”. WTF!?!

UPDATE: Last.fm is a Little Git!

Sure, deselecting the checkbox prevents it from loading at startup, but ANY time removable storage is plugged in back the Last.fm icon appears in my system tray even if I’ve closed it seconds before. More forum scouring reveals a lot of user complaints, along with promises from Last.fm to fix them. Yet I still can’t keep the thing from loading until I ask it to? Sorry, I DON’T THINK SO. The limited scrobbling support in Songbird is good enough, I’m going to completely uninstall this crapware.

LAST.FM, FIX YOUR CRAPPY BROKEN SOFTWARE!!!

I’ve searched for an answer for this for a while. I thought I was blind since I couldn’t see it in the startup config or folder.
Eventhough this is like a year old, thanks!!
