Facebook Joins the DataPortability Workgroup? That Changes Everything!

Facebook, Google And Plaxo Join The DataPortability Workgroup

Plaxo joining the DataPortability Workgroup was a bit of a given because, well, Plaxo kicks butt. (And if they’d only get rid of the Jajah links they added to my Outlook they’d be perfect.) Google joining is a definite bonus, albeit somewhat expected, as they’ve got the marketshare and reach to support standards and still keep people locked in.

But Facebook?!? Second biggest silo to MySpace, the MySpace that makes no excuses about being the being the biggest craphole on the web in contrast to Facebook’s “smart” image, making Facebook the biggest realistic candidate? Score! This could be EXACTLY what’s needed to get the open standards ball moving, cuz everybody wants a piece of the attention and data that people willingly give Facebook every day.

Color me impressed. I’d recently started doubting my support of Facebook, feeling that it was turning into Myspace with a wrinkled vinyl veneer. If they follow through with this it will be a HUGE step towards becoming a truly responsible company, and a product we can all use to enrich our lives.

Yeah, Plaxo’s been getting a lot of press lately on tech blogs. As for Myspace, my account is going down the intertubes next Wednesday. Want to join me?

Oh man that’s tempting! I’m gonna have to think about it.
